CONTROLLED ONION COLD STORAGE

Mechair’s Controlled Onion Cold Storage is a specially designed storage facility where temperature, humidity, and ventilation are carefully regulated to preserve the quality of harvested onions for longer periods – typically 6 to 8 months or even up to a year depending on the variety.

Unlike traditional storage (which uses open or ventilated godowns/sheds and depends on natural air conditions), controlled cold storage uses modern refrigeration, humidity control, and airflow systems to create ideal conditions for onions.

Key Features of Controlled Onion Cold Storage

  • Temperature maintained at 27°C
  • Relative humidity controlled at around 65–70%
  • Good air circulation to prevent moisture build-up and rotting
  • Proper stacking and handling systems to avoid pressure damage in a very economical way

Benefits of Controlled Onion Cold Storage

Extends shelf life: In controlled onion cold storage, onions can be safely stored for 6-8 months without sprouting or rotting – compared to just 2-3 months under traditional storage methods.

Reduces post-harvest losses: Proper cold storage conditions significantly minimize the risk of fungal and bacterial infections which can lead to spoilage.

Maintains quality: Controlled storage helps maintain the texture, flavor, and nutritional value of onions, preventing them from becoming soft or developing off-flavors.

Market timing: Farmers and distributors can store onions until market conditions are favourable, allowing them to sell at higher prices with optimal quality. Our onion cold storage gives marketable time from 4-8 months.

Reduces waste: By extending the shelf life of onions, cold storage reduces spoilage, which benefits both producers and consumers.

Cost-effective: While setting up a controlled onion storage facility may involve initial costs, the long-term savings from reduced spoilage and better market timing can be substantial.

Flexibility in distribution: With controlled onion storage, at a temperature of 27°C, no reheating is required. This allows onion distribution over a longer period in batch-wise quantities, helping to meet demand fluctuations without compromising quality.

Suitable for export: It also helps maintain the high quality required for international markets.

Reduces weight loss: By controlling moisture loss, it reduces weight loss from 30–40% in open storage to 5–10% in cold storage.

Supports processing industries: This cold storage also provides a year-round supply for dehydrated onions, onion powder, and pickling industries.
